Air Conditioner Compressor

Air Compressor Overview

Most an air conditioner compressor is placed in the outside part of the air conditioner system. This compressor is the key device to keep our house cool inside. This old air conditioner design is paradox. The main duty is to keep cool inside the house, but the compressor itself is put out side.

Air conditioning processing is confined to any specified walled area in a house or office. Temperature in the air can be brought down only when the room is enclosed and sealed from all sides. In a refrigerator, air conditioner compressor is installed along with the unit itself, because its cooling covers a limited portion.

Compression

Air conditioner is not only the action of the compressor. The air conditioner compressor is the key but two other important parts of air conditioning processing are the condenser and the evaporator. The general feature of an air conditioner has the evaporator in the enclosed space. The condenser is placed in between evaporator and air conditioner compressor as an external part.

The operation starts from the air conditioner compressor. A low pressure gas is created near the compressor by the movement of the working fluid. The fluid is compressed over here. This compression brings the molecules of the fluid nearer to each other which in turn increases the energy level. The air conditioner compressor heats up thefluid that reaches the condenser in the next phase.

Working fluid

The air conditioner compressor turned the fluid into a high-pressure gas and send it to the condenser. The external fins attached to the air conditioner perform the job of a radiator and thus the temperature of the gas is reduced. The gas is transformed into cool liquid before it strikes the evaporator.

The transfer of the working fluid was initially from low to high pressure. And then in the evaporator it allows the liquid to transfer into vapor and evaporate. This cool vapor and external air are collided each other. And at last, the metal fins in the evaporator propel the process of thermal exchange between the two temperatures of gases.

This process is simple science, it is an exchange heavy and light weighted air. Due to the presence of moisture, the cold air is heavier. When the air conditioner compressor initiates its work, the transfer of gases begins. At the end the replacement takes place where the cool air fills up the enclosed space of the room and the hot air is blown out.

Compressor Failure

Air conditioner compressor usually fails due to one of two conditions: time and hours of operation or abuse. There are some failures that can occur elsewhere in the system that will cause a compressor failure, but these are less common unless the system has been substantially abused.

Abuse of air conditioner compressor is a result of extended running with improper freon charge or as improper service along the way. This improper service can include overcharging, undercharging, installing the wrong starter capacitor as a replacement, removing the thermal limiter, insufficient oil, mixing incompatible oil types or wrong oil, installing a new compressor on a system that had some other failure that was never diagnosed.

The air conditioner compressor can fail in only a handful of different ways. It can fail open, fail shorted, experience a bearing failure, a piston failure and experience a valve failure.

When an air conditioner compressor fails open, a wire inside the compressor breaks. This is unserviceable and the symptom is that the compressor does not run, though it may hum. If the compressor fails open, and following the steps here does not fix it, then the system may be a good candidate for a newcompressor.

Testing for a failed open an air conditioner compressor is easy. Pop the electrical cover for the compressor off and remove the wires and the thermal limiter. Use ohmmeter to measure the impedance from one terminal to another across all three terminals of the compressor. Also measure the impedance to the case of the compressor for all three terminals.
