The number of diseases in humans we come in a lifetime is quite alarming. The fact that people can still stay healthy is just a miracle. In addition to the current global swine flu outbreak, Malaysia also experienced the following disease outbreaks:
# 1 Meningitis outbreak
# 2 Hand foot mouth & outbreak,
# 3 Leptospirosis outbreak
# 4 Acute Pericarditis outbreak
# 5 Cytomegalovirus (SMV)

Fortunately, the above disease outbreaks are limited to specific areas only and is under control by the Ministry of health.


# 1 MENINGITIS OUTBREAK
46 Trainees were still in the insulation Division in the Hospital of Malacca Thursday 14 May 2009 after an outbreak of Meningitis-an infectious disease to the Road Transport Department Academy near Malacca, Malaysia. 85 other trainees have held in quarantine at the Academy. On Monday 4 May 2009, a trainee Road transport complained of having a fever, cough, headache and runny nose died on way to hospital.


State Health Director Ghazali Othman confirmed that the students not by swine flu, or Influenza a (H1N1) virus are infected, but are suspected to have contracted Bacterial Meningitis.


# 2 HAND FOOT MOUTH (HFMD) OUTBREAK &
An outbreak of HFMD occurred in a kindergarten in Selangor, Malaysia. It is closed for a week as a precautionary measure after 4 children were discovered on Monday 11 May 2009. The Health Ministry medical practice Division Director Dr Nooraini Baba confirmed the case. She said there were outbreaks of HFMD throughout the year and advised parents not to be overly concerned-"what's important is that day nurseries and kindergartens good sanitary care and proper disposal of waste should have.


On Thursday 14 May 2009 it was reported that several kindergartens in Kuala Lumpur were closed for several days the following cases of the disease.


HFMD usually don't need treatment, it usually goes away on its own in about 7 to 10 days.Are a common mild and short lasting condition most often that young children during the summer months.


Are a viral infection due to Coxsackie Virus A16, but it can also be due to Enterovirus 71. It is highly contagious, so different members of the family or a school class may be affected.

There may be a slight fever. Sometimes there is a rash on the buttocks. After a few days, the blisters and mouth ulcers arrange to leave no scars.


# 3 LEPTOSPIROSIS – another disease outbreak
An outbreak of leptospirosis near Butterworth, Malaysia saw 26 illegal immigrants from a detention camp prisoners to 2 hospitals admitted. Confirmed cases of leptospirosis were discovered after the death of a 21-year-old prisoner of Myanmar on Tuesday 12 May 2009 of the bacterial illness after admitted to the hospital Bukit Mertajam.


State health, welfare care society member of the Committee that Carla & Boon Poh said the passed 26 prisoners can have consumed water contaminated with the urine of an animal. He said the Myanmar adjourned on Thursday 7 May 2009, decreased symptoms of fever, constipation, urine output lethargy & pedal edema was permitted. More cases of detainees were allowed when found with the symptoms in the camp, which houses 527 prisoners including 69 women and 2 boys. Disinfection is carried out in all 4 blocks in the camp, including the bathrooms & toilets.


Leptospirosis is a disease caused by the Bacteria Leptospira. The usual cause of this disease by exposure to water-for example during floods-with the urine of infected animals such as pigs, cattle, horses, dogs, rodents, wildlife and diseased animal carcasses infected. Water can also be contaminated by micro-organism of feces discharged by dead bodies.


Leptospirosis does not spread from human to human. Infection in humans is water, food or soil contaminated by urine-drinking, eating or skin contact. The bacteria takes 2 to 4 weeks to cause human disease once in the body.


The symptoms of Weil's disease are high fever, chills, muscle pain, severe headache, vomiting, red eyes, diarrhea, rash, abdominal pain and jaundice. If left untreated, it can develop into liver failure, kidney failure, Meningitis (inflammation of the spinal cord and the brain), respiratory problems and even death. Leptospirosis, however, can be treated with antibiotics.


# 4 ACUTE PERICARDITIS-other VIRAL DISEASE INFECTED
Acute Pericarditis is an inflammation of the SAC around the heart, usually caused by a viral infection.


29 Police trainees in a police training centre near Seremban, Malaysia was placed under observation in hospital after a colleague died of Acute Pericarditis on Thursday 14 May 2009. The health authorities were still investigating the source of the disease and how the victim was infected. Meanwhile, anti-biotics to 166 people who came into contact with the deceased are prescribed. Preventive measures are taken to prevent its spread.


# 5 CYTOMEGALOVIRUS (SMV)
Researchers on Thursday 14 May 2009 said that a common virus may be a major cause of high blood pressure-which affects an estimated 1 billion people worldwide.


A herpes virus called Cytomegalovirus (SMV) affects 60% to 99% of adults worldwide-increases inflammation in the blood vessels causes high blood pressure. CMV can also cause hardening of the arteries in combination with fat diet-that a major risk factor for kidney disease, strokes, and heart attacks.


Most adults get exposure to CMV by age 40-although some no no symptoms. The virus can cause harm to transplant recipients and it is a major cause of birth defects in babies, when the mother during pregnancy were infected.
